And The House Committee Said "No!"

The smoldering flames around the commutation of William Ogletree of Monroe county to life sentence, through its many twists and turns, finally came to Atlanta to reach the Georgia General Assembly to find a loud "no" to the charges of "unstable and unfit" leveled at Solicitor General Garland and meant for his impeachment.

Ever since the action taken by the parole board in this case, which must have displeased the Grand Jury, this case has been coming to the surface. It will be recalled, the Grand Jury indicted Commissioner Pannell for his role in the question of parole; then Solicitor Garland was indicted for perjury. The case reached the House Committee with its array of charges and counter charges to be dropped back into the lap of the Grand Jury or whoever is still interested in displaying such a mood before the people.

The House Committee might be trusted in its findings and while we are far from the premise of a trial jury or parole commissioner, we have faith in constituted authority.

We hold, however that those charged with the enforcing and execution of the laws, should work unrestrainedly and that no form of coercion or intimidation should harass them in their effort to exercise wisdom, justice and moderation in the execution of one of the most important phases of the provisions of the Constitution of these United States.

Let there be more courageous officials and may they be encouraged to do their duty without favor or fear.
