HOLDS MEETING
At the noon hour on Wednesday last at Bahlke's restaurant, a luncheon and business meeting of the Northwestern Alaska Chamber of Commerce was held at which many of the members were present.
The luncheon also was in the nature of a farewell to Messrs. Alfred J. Lomen, Henry Burgh and C. J. Woofter, who will represent this division at the forthcoming session of the Territorial Legislature and to G. R. Jackson of the Miners and Merchants Bank, and E. F. Bauer of the Alaska Road Commission, who are going to the States on business.
These gentlemen, with the exception of Mr. Burgh, left on the airplane Thursday morning. Mr. Burgh expects to leave on the next trip of the plane on or about Feb. 10.
Secretary Polet read a letter from the Cordova Chamber of Commerce relative to the organization of a Territorial Chamber of Commerce, and after a brief discussion the matter was referred to a committee composed of the elected representatives and senators of this division who are members of this chamber, who will meet with chamber members from other divisions at Juneau, to discuss the matter of forming a Territorial chamber.
From the Fairbanks Chamber came the suggestion to advance the date of the general election to September and the convening of the Territorial Legislature to February.
Former Senator Thomas D. Jensen stated that this matter had been brought up in former years by the delegation from the Fourth Division and that it always met with the opposition of the other three Divisions. The matter was referred to the Judicial Committee of the chamber.
A resolution adopted by the Cordova Chamber of Commerce regarding the withdrawal of oil lands and the passage of leasing acts as to oil and coal lands which it was claimed, retarded development work, was read by the secretary and referred to the Mining Committee; the legislators from this division were also asked to look into the matter.
Grant R. Jackson, chairman of the Telegraph and Mail Committee, made a brief verbal report. Thru the efforts of the Chamber the Christmas mail and another special mail was received by plane from Fairbanks while yet another mail will be received along about February 10th. Efforts are being made to have the mails forwarded by plane at least twice a month from Fairbanks until the opening of navigation.
W. J. Rowe, chairman of the Roads and Trails committee, also made a verbal report in regard to the matters coming within the purview of his committee.
Secretary Polet brought up the matter of the building of a mooring mast at Nome and after considerable discussion the matter was referred to the Aeronautical committee, with power to take appropriate action.
L. E. Robinson spoke in regard to the proposition of holding an annual Fair and stated that a committee was working on the matter and that in a short time it will be in a position to submit plans for the formation of a permanent organization.
The members of the Territorial Legislature requested that they be kept closely posted on the needs of the division and pledged themselves to support the Chamber of Commerce. Dr. J F. O'Hara, the newest member of the Chamber, also offered a few remarks.
The meeting then adjourned to meet again at the call of the chair.
