Full Text

Much about the same parts of Italy, where Hannibal defeated the Romans, in two battles after crossing the Alps, will be the approaching seat of war between the French and Austro-Sardinian armies; and where the contests, should peace be not established, will now be particularly severe, especially as the fate of Austrian Lombardy in a great measure depends on the issue. It was also in nearly the same situation, that Marius, the Roman Consul, overthrew with prodigious slaughter, a numerous army of the Gauls. The Emperor and indeed the King of Sardinia, from various considerations, have been thought to have strong inclinations to accommodations, yet about the 1st of April the British minister Sir Morton Eden, and the Sardinian minister to the court of Vienna, had frequent conferences; and a new subsidy to the latter was spoken of to enable him to join in opening the ensuing campaign.
