Murray's amendment would provide an average of 3,000,000 jobs, estimates CIO Unemployment Director Ralph Hetzel Jr., at Washington.
A vigorous fight for a similar amendment introduced by Rep. Joseph E. Casey was made in the house.
The WPA bill was to come up for debate in the senate about June 3, and will be acted on within three or four days. It is important, therefore, for locals to get support immediately from senators for the Murray amendment.
The WPA bill which passed the house provides an average of less than 2,000,000 jobs. It also provides that WPA workers without dependents shall work not more than 65 hours a month, and thus receive not more than half the already inadequate security wage.
When you write your senators to urge support of the Murray amendment, ask them to support also the following provisions which the CIO is fighting for:
1. Restoration of prevailing hourly wage rates.
2. Elimination of the 18-month layoff provision.
3. Elimination of 25% sponsorship.
4. Increases in monthly wage levels.
5. Restoration of theatre project.
The chances of passing the Murray amendment and of liberalizing the WPA bill in the senate are quite good-if all possible support is rallied quickly. Speed is essential.
