Knoxville, March 2.

Mr. Wilson—There is reason to believe that Mobile will shortly be given up to the U. States—the hope is entertained that no serious difficulty will attend this important object. It is understood that a national council will be held in the Creek nation, in the month of March, at which it is believed, that Col. Hawkins will be instructed to attend, to deliver a speech from the president of the U. States, to explain to them more in detail, the objects of the government in exploring the land and water courses, within their boundary, and to inform them, that the survey (heretofore attempted by Capt. Gaines) will be recommenced in the approaching season. This looks something like attention to an important object with us. It is also believed that measures are in train to prevent abuses practised by the Choctaws and Chickasaws on, and towards travellers, who travel the road from Nashville to Natchez. It is high time attention was paid to the correction of those abuses. The hope is entertained that in future prompt attention will be paid to complaints of injuries and insults received and sustained on that important way leading to and from market. No doubt is entertained but that government will, at all times, on complaint made of abuses practised, provide the remedy; or guard against a repetition of similar ones: but—unless complaints are made of actual injuries, from time to time, sustained by travellers, government cannot apply the remedy: It is so important in every point of view, that the lives, liberty and property of travellers to and from market, on ways passing through the tract of country inhabited by the Indians, should be protected, that every depredation or interruption, on or towards travellers, should be made known to government in a regular manner, that redress may be had. When those nations are made to pay for losses sustained at their hands, they will soon alter their conduct towards travellers, and treat them with friendship: it would be a pleasing reverse!
