For the Herald.
THOMAS WILSON DORR.
Who claimed a right of suffrage
Above the charter law,
For all adult male citizens?
Thomas Wilson Dorr.
Who claimed this as an equal right,
As in the days of yore,
The days of the first charter?
Thomas Wilson Dorr.
Who claimed it without purchase
By money, acres, or
By birth—Who claimed it as a right?
Thomas Wilson Dorr.
Who claimed, Rhode Island citizens
Should be compelled no more
To pay a tax without a vote?
Thomas Wilson Dorr.
Who, when he was commissioner,
Kept all the banks in awe,
And made them all redeem their bills?
Thomas Wilson Dorr.
Who then by faithful dealing
Kept from their eager maw,
The people's earnings, safe and sound?
Thomas Wilson Dorr.
Who is a true Democrat,
Sound to the very core,
Unflinching and unchangeable?
Thomas Wilson Dorr.
No wonder aristocracy
Does perfectly abhor
This people's friend—this tyrants foe—
Thomas Wilson Dorr.
No wonder he's belaboured
With foul and angry jaw;
They hate with perfect hatred
The very name of Dorr!
