The Court of France has artfully diverted our Ministry, for several Days past, with Proposals, Messages, Answers, &c. in Order to conceal their real Intentions, which were to facilitate the treacherous Schemes they have been hatching since the Commencement of the War between the Turks and Russians.
They have now actually succeeded so far that it will cost England much Trouble, Expense, and many Men, to stop their Progress. These Transactions ring through the World, and draw so many Eyes upon us as quite look into all our weaker Parts: Our Protection is no longer relied upon by the Russians, nor our Alliance courted; the neighbouring Nations first despise then venture to insult us, for Mankind are apt to imagine that where there is no Council there can be no Strength.
It is true our Arms have been dreadful in the Field, and our Fleets have been the Terror of the Main; but are they to be feared, who, after all their martial Toils, can be so easily defeated in the Cabinet?
