This evening the high school basket ball team plays its initial game with Zanesville on the latter's floor. Although having the disadvantage of a lack of practice on account of vacation, the team under the exceptionally good direction of Coach Miller, has been whipped into good shape for the first game. Unluckily, Captain Shiresman was hurt and the doctor forbade him to play. However, it is to be hoped that he will be in condition to play in the Newark game, which is scheduled for next Friday at the Y. M. C. A. This year the high school has the great advantage of having a very efficient coach in the person of M. D. Miller. Coach Miller, while in college, played on the varsity team and made a very good showing. Mr. Miller plays on the Mounts of this city and recently showed his ability in the game against Kenyon. As to the team itself we need not say much as everyone knows of the great showing made last year. So far Yauger has proved himself the best qualified for the guard position that Altenburg left vacant by graduation. However, before the season closes it is probable that the position will be closely contested.
The program at chapel Wednesday morning was an exceedingly good one, containing some very fine orations. Miss Clementine Rose, one of the girls who won the trip to Washington, for making the best loaf of bread in the county, then told very interestingly of her trip. Miss Rose's bread was decided by the judges to be the best in the state. The program was as follows:
Song--Just for Today.
A B C's of Painting--Nina Shifflette.
Washington at Valley Forge--Myrtle Mapes.
Success in Life--Wilford Phillips.
Trip to Washington--Clementine Rose.
Roman Forum--Elsie Schipper
Next Friday evening in the high school auditorium the eighth grade from the central building will give an entertainment, the proceeds of which will go towards their piano and music fund. A very good miscellaneous musical program will be offered for which the charge of ten cents will be made.
The debaters have settled down to hard work which will continue for several months. Coach Dawson from O. W. U. was in town Wednesday and held a session with the teams which lasted the whole morning. During this session he told them how to write their speeches, etc.
Friday morning Mr. Chubb organized what will be called a Whistling Glee club. It will be composed of about twenty boys and will meet once every week.
Mr. Rimer, the history teacher at high school, was unable to attend school Friday on account of a death in the family.
Miss Ila Williams was unable to teach school Monday of this week on account of a slight sickness.
