Full Text

The transactions between the late Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and his Majesty's Cabinet Council, are of a private, and not a public concern; nor could any of that Council bring what was said there into parliamentary debate, without a breach of that oath of office, which they take as Cabinet ministers, not to make publicly or privately known what passes there.—

Mr. Beresford might as well demand a Parliamentary Enquiry, why he was dismissed from the Irish Revenue Board by Earl Fitzwilliam, as Earl Fitzwilliam insist on knowing why he was recalled from the Viceroyalty. To establish a precedent for such enquiries, would be to unhinge that prerogative which has been held sacred from the Revolution to the present moment: nor can it tend to any other purpose on the present occasion, than that of promoting discord, and giving birth to invective.

Event Details

Transactions between the late Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and the Cabinet Council are private; parliamentary debate would breach ministers' oath. Mr. Beresford's dismissal by Earl Fitzwilliam parallels inquiry into Fitzwilliam's recall from Viceroyalty, risking precedent against sacred prerogative since the Revolution.
