Another Suit Filed By Avery

KANSAS CITY, Mo.(FP)— Montgomery Ward & Co. has filed a $1,300,000 libel suit in federal court here against the United Retail Wholesale & Dept. Store Employees, the Kansas City local of the union and more than a score of members and officers.

Edwin Chevlin, union spokesman, called the suit "another attempt by Sewell Avery to stifle the freedom of the press" and charged that the mail order company was "trying to keep the CIO from printing the truth."

Ward's suit complains that statements in union leaflets distributed during a drive to organize employees of its mail order plant and retail store in Kansas City damaged its goodwill and reputation.
