John F. Kennedy took the oath of office as President of the United States Friday and assumed the most terrible responsibility of any human being. One of the terrifying aspects of this responsibility is the failure of the American people to recognize the dangers. Despite the economic recession, and the various other economic ills which plague us, the surface of American life is still securely comfortable.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower has followed the precept that most problems become less grave if you just ignore them.

He always used the power of his office to draw a picture of a constantly improving world situation in a period when the world situation was constantly deteriorating. The very fact that this deterioration has been concealed, or otherwise ignored, will make President Kennedy's task even harder. Not only must we have new, affirmative and positive leadership in meeting America's world responsibilities, but the American people must be aroused to this urgent necessity.

The great majority of Americans may remain comfortable and unconcerned for a little while longer, but the responsible citizens who mold the thought and action of our country must awaken to their responsibilities.

The American economy is stagnant. The once almighty dollar is dangerously weak in the world markets. The weapons balance is in worse shape than the dollar balance.

The arrogant Communist pressure in little Laos is symbolic of the troubles we face in every part of the world. More and more boldly the Soviets are guiding their every effort to take over the weaker nations newly liberated by the developing forces of nationalism. They have largely succeeded in Cuba, and may do so in Laos and the Congo.

We face the possibility that the influence of the Kremlin will predominate in Southeast Asia, in Africa. and in much of Latin America and Middle East. The task of John F. Kennedy is to provide American leadership which will turn the tide of this new wave of Communist success.

All Americans devoutly wish him success in these efforts.
