Full Text

July 4. On Saturday a Packet of Letters was brought to the Admiralty Office from Admiral Haddock, giving an Account of the Fleet's safe Arrival off Port Mahon, and that the Crews were in good Condition: But these Letters give no Account of the Spanish Register Ship said to be so richly laden, falling into the Hands of Admiral Haddock's Squadron.

July 5. 'Tis said, That upon the King of Spain's being informed of the arrival of Admiral Haddock, with the English Squadron under his Command, in the Mediterranean, his Catholick Majesty immediately sent Orders to the Commanders of the Fleet laden with the Treasure at New-Spain, not to venture to return, till the six Men of War, lately sailed from Cadiz was arrived to convoy them. It would, without doubt, be a great Pleasure to that Admiral and the rest of the Officers with him (if they were furnished with Orders to intercept those Dons) to encounter not only that Fleet and the 6 Men of War with it, but also the Same Number added to them: But we believe the Spaniards are too well acquainted with the Courage of the English Admirals to venture too near him.
