CROPS INFLUENCED
BY THERMAL REGIME
Virginia's wide selection of farm crops is directly influenced by the thermal region, according to the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce.
Average dates of killing frosts set the periods of safe plant growth and thus control the farming activities from Accomac to Lee Counties. The frost free periods show averages of 244 days at Langley Field, 243 at Cape Henry, 218 at Richmond, 204 at Lynchburg, 211 at Danville, 180 at Staunton, 168 at Blacksburg and 150 at Burkes Garden in Tazewell County, which is 3,200 feet above sea level. These figures are based on observations made in Virginia for 50 years, the Chamber said.
