In the Senate, on Friday last, several bills were read a third time and passed; but no business of national importance was transacted.—In the House, Mr. Ross, of Ohio, submitted a resolution, instructing an inquiry into the expediency of providing by law for the election of a Delegate from the District of Columbia, to represent the same in the Congress of the United States. After a short discussion, the resolution was ordered to lie on the table. The debate upon the Tariff Bill was again resumed in committee of the whole. The immediate question depending from the day preceding, was on the motion, as amended by Mr. Tracy, to strike out fifteen per centum (the addition proposed upon the rate of duties now existing on the importation of distilled Spirits) and inserting in lieu thereof fifty per centum. After a Speech in opposition to this motion by Mr. Tomlinson, it was decided in the negative by a large majority. The question then recurred on the motion of Mr. Foot, of Connecticut, to strike out the whole of the clause proposing an increase of duty on the importation of distilled Spirits; and, being taken, was decided in the negative, 102 votes to 67. The House also negatived, after debate, a motion to strike out the clause proposing the duty on oranges, lemons and limes. A motion to strike out thirty per centum ad valorem on all manufactures of wool, and insert in lieu thereof, twenty five per cent, was also negatived, 106 to 71. Mr. Brent, of Louisiana, then moved to amend the bill, by striking out the clause which proposes to lay a duty of 6 cents per yard on all cotton bagging imported. Before the debate on this motion was finished, the Committee rose, and the House adjourned to Monday—to which day the Senate also adjourned.
