DOMESTIC.

IN DEFIANCE OF LAW.

The following occurrence has been communicated to us by a gentleman who passed thro' Bath, a few days since; his account states, That the brig Mary Jane was loaded in that port in open day, in the usual manner, with a cargo of provisions, &c. that in the mean time a vessel was hired by the collector as a cutter, and armed with two four pounders and some swivels, and manned by a number of volunteers who proceeded down the river about two miles ahead of the brig, where they waited the movements of the suspected anti-embargo vessel, for several days:--that the brig when fully loaded and prepared for sail, dropped down with a lantern hoisted at her fore yard arm, and by chance, having on board three or four six pounders with a few hardy and determined American seamen; that on passing the cutter she was fired at, and returned the salute--that several shot were exchanged between them; the brig still keeping on her course, and eventually passing out to sea: The cutter, he understood, receiving no other damage than having the clue of her main-sail cut away; that the injury done the brig was unknown, as she kept a straight course outwards. On passing the fort, she fired a salute with two guns, accompanied with the cheering voice of exultation for having escaped the tyranny of domestic oppressors. The cutter did not think proper to follow the brig, but returned to Bath and discharged her crew....Boston Gaz.

Bath is the town-ship in Massachusetts, whose wild and insurrectionary resolutions have been already re-published in this paper!--One of these resolutions proposes the appointment of Committees of Safety and Correspondence in all the town-ships of the State, similar to those which embodied and organized an opposition to G. Britain in '75.--Such is the spirit adopted by a majority of the town-ship of Bath--the commentary is to be found in the preceding flagrant violation of the laws of the general government.--Is there a man who will now deny the necessity of the new law, enforcing the embargo--of some new powers to repress the ebullitions of this turbulent spirit? Yet does this daring outrage on the laws of the land receive the countenance and protection of the federal prints of Boston--the laws of the government are infamously denominated a "tyranny" upon the rights of the people-- and the officers of that government are dubbed with the mild epithet of domestic oppressors"--And are these the men who have arrogated to themselves the exclusive title of "Friends of Order"--and "Friends of the government?" Are these the men who have pretended to cant about the riot and insurrection of the Eastern States--who are thus attempting to gild over insurrection and treason, with the fictitious merit of resistance to tyranny--and encouraging the people to rebellion by their sympathy and applause? Henceforth let these men be yclept "Jacobins"--Anarchists--Disorganizers--any thing rather than "the Friends of Order"--and the "Friends of the Law."
