The recent General Election in Vermont has resulted in the triumph of correct principles, and the total discomfiture of "the faction which sinks as the country rises."
Gov. Galusha is re-elected by a very large majority over Gen. Strong, the most popular federalist in that State. The majority it is said will be nearly 3000. The Upper House of the Legislature is wholly republican, and the majority in the Lower House is increased. But what is particularly gratifying is the entire change in the delegation to Congress. The present Representatives are all Federal, but in the late election they are superseded by six republicans who are chosen to the next Congress.
From present appearances it is probable that the federal numbers in the next Congress will be very considerably diminished. Few elections have as yet been held -but there is already a republican gain of fourteen. Many more favourable changes will take place; and we much doubt whether there will be a single instance in any part of the U. States where a republican will be superseded by a federalist. Indeed we have no wish to see the federal numbers in the national legislature reduced below what they are likely to be in the next Congress. There will be no stronger opposition than will be salutary. There ought always to be a check upon the government; and however wise and good those may be who have the management of our public affairs, they ought to be watched in order that they may be kept straight in the ways of well doing.
No man is so honest but he needs looking after; and if our public servants should do wrong, we may be very sure that the keen eyes of federalism will detect them. Federalists therefore, with all the mischief they occasion, will be of some service to their country, if they do not foolishly destroy what little influence they have left, by indiscriminately attacking all the measures of administration right or wrong.
