Of the Talents and Benevolence of an Indian Chief.
There lived a few years ago on Nantucket, a Sagamore or Indian chief, whose character deserves to be preserved. He had a peculiar talent for setting dislocated bones. In the last 14 years of his life, in which he kept an exact account, he set or healed no less than 1151 bones, and as he had practised some years before, he supposed he had operated on 1600 or 1700 persons. What is a remarkable trait in his character he never took fee or reward for the most important services; even when he spent days and weeks in dressing wounds. He had the satisfaction of never losing a patient while under his care. This honest, worthy Indian died in November, 1797, at the advanced age of 84 years—a remarkable instance of native ingenuity and humanity.
