An howitzer has been invented in France, called Villantrois' howitzer, which shoots a shell to the distance of some toises or 10,500 feet; the charge is 45 lbs. of powder, the wt. of the shell 80; the greatest height of the throw not to exceed 700 toises; the projectile takes from 30 to 45 seconds to run over its curve; its range exceeds by 1200 toises that of the celebrated Congreve Rockets. The piece & carriage weigh about 11,000 kilogrammes (the Kilogramme is little more than 2 lbs) and notwithstanding their enormous dimensions and weight, are from the peculiar construction of the carriage, as easily managed as the common ginger mortars.
