Full Text
The Melvin Smith Defense Committee met Friday and heard discussions of the case and later approved some expenditures for aid to the family which has moved to another section in the city.
The committee also named three persons to confer with attorneys in the case and appropriate officials to see if young Smith's release from jail could be effected, so he could begin to support his wife, three children and two nieces.
At present, Mrs. Smith's mother, who earns a small weekly salary, is providing the support Smith's family is presently receiving.
Meanwhile, the official remittitur from the Supreme Court advising Superior Court officials of the high court reversal of a judge's order denying Smith a new trial was received in the Superior Court clerk's office Thursday.
It is now up to the lower Court officials to decide if a third trial on the case is needed, or if the charges against Smith will be dropped.
The remittitur from the Supreme Court merely is a directive advising the lower court that a new trial for Smith is now in order, should another hearing be deemed desirable.
