Buffalo In One
Lesson In Korea
WITH THE 77TH INF. DIV. U. S. ARMY. IN KOREA-(ANP)-
How long does it take a replacement to absorb the spirit of the 17th Infantry "Buffalo" Regiment?
In the case of Pvt. Jimmie Lee Beachum, of Clovis, N. M., one fracas with the enemy was more than sufficient.
"I kidded Jimmie about not being able to grow a moustache when he first joined our company," said Pvt. Owen Boyle, Chicago; "said he'd never become a 'Buffalo' and he'd get so mad, he'd fume."
After their company had taken a recent objective, the enemy secured reinforcements, pulled a "banzai" and surrounded Beachum's platoon. The Chinese attack was so overwhelming that supporting tank men resorted to the use of their 45s.
The "Buffaloes" stood their ground and finally repulsed the frantic Red attack. During the height of the struggle, Beachum remained calmly in his foxhole and fired away in all directions.
Some of the guys around him got hit," added Boyle. "But Jimmie kept banging away and, all of a sudden, it was all over."
Beachum was credited with saving the right flank of his company's position and personally accounting for 16 Reds.
"Maybe I can only grow peach fuzz," laughed Beachum. "But I'm a 'Buffalo' now."
