BUDAPEST. Oct. 16. (P)—The government of Hungary started doubling its army to an estimated four hundred and twenty thousand men, in what officials said was a peace—not a war—mobilization. Five classes totaling two hundred thousand were called as a measure necessary for Hungarian security, now endangered by continued mobilization of the Czech army, plus the collapse of negotiations over Hungarian demands for parts of Czechoslovakia. Surprise was occasioned by the disclosure that the army numbered about two hundred and twenty thousand, as the post-war Trianon Treaty limited the force to thirty-five thousand. The call to colors was decided upon at a cabinet meeting and formally decreed by the War Ministry.
