FIGHT TO UNSEAT SOCIALISTS LAUNCHED

Albany, N. Y., March 31.—Tumultuous scenes were enacted in the assembly this afternoon in the opening of the fight to unseat the five socialist members.

Long before the debate on the legality of unseating the members was reached the members of the house engaged in a wordy, two hour wrangle on the matter of postponing a vote.

So riotous became the proceedings that Speaker Sweet after pounding for considerable time finally said:

"The members of this house are conducting themselves in a disorderly manner. It is more like a riot than orderly procedure." I appeal to members to be gentlemen and true representatives of your state and your districts.

The trouble started when Representative Hammil, of New York, moved that a vote on the unseating of the men be postponed until tomorrow. He said he had not had a chance to examine the majority report of the committee recommending the socialists' expulsion and his claim was backed up by other members. His motion was lost, 41 to 90.

Then, Representative McCue, Tammany member from New York, moved a two-hour recess and started conducting a one-man filibuster against the vote being taken today.
