On Tuesday the 7th Instant, the Ship First of August, Ferdinando Bowd Master, arrived here from Philadelphia who gives us the following Particulars. viz. That on Sunday, the 5th, at 5 o'Clock in the Morning, Lat. per Ob. 13. 4. N. He Saw a Sloop bearing S. E. which gave him Chase : At 6 He hoisted an English Pendant, and fired a Gun to Leeward. Some small Time after he lower'd his Pendant, and hoisted a French Jack at his Top-Mast Head, and fired a Shot ; very soon after another. On which Capt. Bowd hoisted his Ensign and Pendant, and haul'd up his Courses ; he proved to be a French Privateer of 10 or 12 Guns, and upwards of 100 Men. She immediately attacked the First of August. The Engagement began about Seven o'Clock. and continued very hot till Twelve. Capt. Bowd beat her off three Times. The first he put her on the Careen to stop her Leaks. The Second to refit : and the third Time he haul'd her Wind. On which the First of August gave Chase, but could not come up with her. Some small Time after she put about, and stood after Capt. Bowd (at about a Mile and a Half distance) till Six o'Clock : when she haul'd her Wind. and stood to Northward. It was about 30 Leagues to Windward of the Island, at the Time when the Engagement began, and 20 when she left off chasing.
Capt. Bowd behaved gallantly : Likewise a Passenger: and all the Men in general : There were but 17 Hands on Board (including Two Boys) The First of August was much damaged in her Hull, Masts, Yards, Sails and Rigging ; but not a Man wounded.
There is great Reason to imagine the Enemy sustained considerable Damage ; or would not have sheered off so soon.
