NEW COLLEGE TREASURER.
Charles P. Smith Succeeds E. Henry Powell at Vermont.
Burlington, June 30.-Charles P. Smith, president of the Burlington Savings bank, has been elected treasurer of the university of Vermont, to succeed Col. E. Henry Powell, who resigns on account of advancing years. The trustees of the university make the following statement, which covers the ground thoroughly:

"The trustees of the university of Vermont have been considering carefully for several days the question of a successor to Mr. E. Henry Powell, who has efficiently for seventeen years served the university as treasurer. There was a large number of candidates, many of them well known citizens of Burlington and most of them possessing qualifications which strongly appealed to the trustees.

The selection of a successor to Mr. Powell was recognized as a matter of very great importance, because of the progress which has been made towards the securing of a considerable endowment fund. After extended discussion and a careful consideration of the qualifications of all the candidates, the board of trustees finally decided unanimously to offer the position to Mr. C. P. Smith, president of the Burlington Savings bank, who had not been a candidate. A committee, on behalf of the board, consisting of Messrs. Converse, Powers, Fisk, Roberts and Kingsley, waited on Mr. Smith this morning, and he was finally persuaded, after some hesitation, to accept the position.

"The trustees congratulate themselves on this action of Mr. Smith. They believe that at this particular juncture in the affairs of the university it would scarcely be possible to secure the services of a man who can render such signal services to the college as Mr. Smith can."
