HATTERAS MAN, BOATSWAIN,
TAKES AMPHIBIOUS COURSE

Little Creek, Va. (FHTNC)- Lester B. Ballance, boatswain's mate second class, USN, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Ballance of Hatteras, was among the 90 men qualified as assault boat coxswains in a course conducted at the Naval Amphibious Base, by the Atlantic Fleet Amphibious Force.

The new coxswains will be attached to Boat Unit 2, a large detachment which provides small landing craft and crews for amphibious landings. This unit is normally based at Little Creek, but can be embarked aboard landing ships, attack transports or attack cargo ships for maneuvers or actual landings.

In order to qualify as an assault boat coxswain, candidates must be able to pilot boats up to 28 tons through surf onto beachheads. The largest landing craft the coxswains are taught to maneuver can carry 25-ton tanks or 120 combat-equipped foot soldiers.
