Full Text

On Tuesday the nomination of Mr. Herrick, as district attorney for Ohio was rejected in the U. S. Senate. On Wednesday the vote of rejection was reconsidered-and the nomination lies on the table. Mr. Herrick was one of the Jackson Electors of Ohio ; the opposition to him is not supposed to be political. The nomination of Mertin Gordon, as Collector of New-Orleans, vice Beverly Chew, removed, is among the confirmed. The nomination of the Collector of this port was said to be under discussion on Tuesday, without result-though not without strong manifestations of opposition, and from a quarter, 'as we apprehend, not anticipated. Although it seems to have been determined by the Senate, that the superseding of faithful and competent officers, by men untried at least, and certainly not in any respect superiour, is a safe and proper exercise of executive discretion, there is, nevertheless, as we are given to understand, a pretty rigid scrutiny instituted into the character and qualifications of the new incumbents, with a settled purpose, where these are found wanting, not to permit political services, real or imaginary, to cloak the deficiency.--New-York American.
