To the Editor of the Portland Gazette.

SIR—On perusing the Eastern Argus of 1st of February, I was surprised to observe a misstatement of facts in that paper, relating to a town meeting in Woolwich, holden the 6th day of said month. Although I am not influenced by any party spirit, I think it a duty incumbent on me, to rectify that misstatement.

A very severe snow storm, prevented a full meeting of the inhabitants on that day. Twenty six freeholders only, met. There after choosing a moderator, and a committee of five, the meeting was adjourned for a short time; at the expiration of which, they met again, and the committee made their report, by producing some resolves, expressive of their feelings on the present alarming and distressed situation of the country, and the causes which produced them—Also a petition to the Legislature of this Commonwealth, praying for redress of grievances. After some observations on the resolves, by a respectable gentleman on the opposite side, they were accepted, with the exception only of four dissenting votes. The votes in favor of the petition were unanimous.

The season was considered too far advanced to admit of adjourning to a future day, as the Legislature had been some time in session.

The foregoing is a true statement of the proceedings on that day. If the editor of the Argus, should doubt the veracity of the subscriber, he is at liberty to satisfy himself and the public, by applying to the moderator of said meeting.

I am respectfully yours,

A. McKown, Town Clerk.
