Robeson Ban

NEW YORK—Ferdinand C. Smith, secretary of the National Maritime Union, sent the following wire protesting the resolution designed to prevent Paul Robeson from appearing in Peoria, Ill.:

"Your action in attempting to prevent the noted American artist, Paul Robeson, from giving a concert in your city tonight is shocking affront to all decent Americans. Such actions are to be expected from Fascist minded groups in America and not by elected public officials who are pledged to uphold and not trample upon the Constitution of the United States. We urge prompt reconsideration of your action in line with traditional American practice and Constitutional guarantees of free speech."
