We do not open a number of the Aurora without finding its editorial department almost literally filled with misrepresentations and downright falsehoods. This vicious trait in the character of the editor of that print, is aggravated by the habitual practice of reiterating and reasserting untruths, after he has seen them unanswerably refuted. He wantonly strikes at the reputation of every man that happens to come in his way, and fabricates circumstances that never occurred, in order to give a color of truth to his calumny. For instance, to sustain his abuse of Mr. Dallas, Duane says that Mr. Sheldon was inveigled out of the treasury into a foreign country, in order that the mismanagement in the treasury might not be detected.
We exposed. The fact is, and we personally know it, that Mr. Sheldon, left the treasury from ill-health, in opposition to the wishes of the head of the department, and we believe of the president himself. Mr. Sheldon, although a federalist, was an American in heart, and a most excellent chief clerk; hence the aversion to part with him; but the business was too laborious for his feeble constitution, and he has for ten years been desirous of going to Europe for his health. From this mole-hill has the Aurora endeavored to raise a mountain of ridiculous slander!
