A curious case has been heard in the London police court, the Countess of Landsfelt, Lola Montes, having been apprehended on a charge of bigamy. It seems that after her forced retreat from Munich, where she was the cause of the insurrection in 1848, she went to London and in July last married a Mr. Heald, a young man of 25, a lieutenant in the army, and possessing £6000 a year. She had, however, been married in 1837 to a Captain James, in Ireland, and although a decree of separation had been subsequently pronounced in the Consistory Court, it did not give either party power to marry again. Discovering this fact, the aunt of the youth to whom she has just been united, has caused her to be arrested for bigamy, but as the young gentleman himself had no wish to dissolve the union, and the aunt could bring no proof that the first husband, Captain James, who was last heard of with his regiment in India, may not have been dead at the time of the present marriage, the magistrate by whom the case was heard felt extremely doubtful as to his power to order a committal, and at length decided upon accepting two sureties in £500 each, and the Countess herself in £1000. The next day the papers announced that the lady and her new husband had taken their departure for the continent.
