The Work of the Ku-Klux Committee.

The Congressional Sub-Committee is now in Spartanburg, where its investigations will probably detain it for a week or more. The Spartanburg gives us the following notes of the work of the committee:

"Hon. James Chesnut came up on Friday and was examined for three hours or more. General W. H. Wallace and Colonel Joseph F. Gist, from Unionville, have also been summoned here for the same purpose. These gentlemen looked as well and cheerful as could be expected. A large number of colored witnesses have been summoned, and are crowded into the backyard of the Palmetto, awaiting the time of their respective examinations. Detachments of United States Cavalry, under the guidance of W. Magill Fleming, S. T. Poinier, C. L. Casey, or some one of their kind, have left town almost daily for the last week to summon witnesses, and in two or three instances have made arrests. What the proof is, so far, we know not. Certain it is that much of the testimony will bear a great deal of sifting to arrive at the truth. If the personnel of many of the witnesses could go along with their testimony it would not do Democracy much damage in 1872, among fair-minded voters. We have heard of at least one of the negro witnesses who was threatened with personal violence by a certain white Radical if he did not say that violence had been inflicted upon him, and that he knew and would divulge the names of parties. One negro said that a white man wanted him to swear that certain parties were guilty of violating the revenue law, &c. We mention these things to show the programme that is being adopted by some of the leading Radicals to make their impression upon the minds of the committee, and to get the evidence wanted."
