WASHINGTON PTA CELEBRATES FOUNDERS' DAY
Booker T. Washington school honored the Founders of the PTA in a very impressive candlelighting service Thursday evening at 8 o'clock in the school auditorium. Approximately two hundred persons were present. The regular business session of the PTA was held at 7 o'clock with Mrs. Clara Watson, presiding.
The program was held immediately following the business. The opening song "America" was sung by the audience. Mrs. Clara Watson was pianist and also offered the PTA prayer. The history of the PTA was given by Mrs. Lavada McFarlin, while little Veva Nell Parr lighted candles for our founders. Mrs. Florida Sparks was next on program with a beautiful rendition of "I Believe." A pageant. "The Objectives of the PTA" was presented by some third, fourth and fifth grade pupils. The singers were: Sylvia Brown, Loueveyln Alexander, Sammie Shavers, Curtis Lee Davis, Robert Cunningham, Flora Winstead, George Doles, Lawrence Evans, Rosalyn Alston, Lindsey Thomas, Janice Givens, Marion Robinson, Elleanor LaMoyne, Mary Lois Coffey, Willie Ward. Geneva Walker, Robert Young, Mary Robinson, Ardie Williams, Myrtle Mason, Leola McFarlin, Martha Jones, and Joyce Buford. Speakers were: Henry Singleton, Flora Winstead, Dorothy Long and Barbara Leary. Choral readers included: William Bridges. Clernestine Gannaway, Franklin Harris, Waverly Jones, Samuel Lewis, Ethel Reed, Ermogene Ferguson, James Ward, Winifred Whitfield, James Willis, Jennifer Winstead, Deborah Winstead Mary Nelson, Phillip Jenkins, Mahlon Martin, Edith Davis, Jacquelyn Watson, Laverne Ashford, Fred Carter, Curtis Wesley, Veva Nell Parr, Allene Caldwell, Phillip S. Shavers, Ruth Rodgers, Lois Watkins, Kenneth Henderson, Gloria Brown, Lenora Carrington, Hubert Bryant. Celestine Williams, Raymond Carpenter, Curtis Graves, James Porter, Dorothy Long, Alice Vault, Edwina Williams, Shirley Hayes and Aloise Wheeler. Frederick York was narrator.
Past presidents of South End school and Booker T. Washington school who were present were presented to the audience and given gifts of appreciation for services. They were: Mesdames Jo Ann Harrison, Eloise Harrison, Clara Webb, Caldonia Broom, Icie Miller, and Ellen Carpenter.
Mrs. Cleola Prowell, the oldest teacher in service (Booker T. Washington), was also presented a gift.
After the Founders' day gift had been announced a social period was held with hospitality committee in charge.
