Missionary Tells Of His Work for Chinese Lepers

Made Friends With Pirates and Converted Many to Further His Work

Dr. John Lake, of Canton, China, distinguished missionary of the Baptist denomination, who is visiting in Hendersonville and this section, spoke at the First Baptist church Sunday morning to a large audience on mission work in China, with particular reference to his own work as a missionary and founder of a leper hospital in that country. Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock Dr. Lake addressed an audience at Fruitland Institute; Sunday evening he spoke at the East Flat Rock Baptist church at 8 o'clock; and this morning at 11 o'clock he addressed a large gathering of Baptists at Mud Creek church.

Dr. Lake is a native of Edgefield, S. C. After attending The Citadel in Charleston and a theological seminary of his denomination, he went to China as a missionary. He has labored in that country for more than 30 years.

Perhaps the most interesting and impressive part of Dr. Lake's missionary addresses is that dealing with his efforts in behalf of the lepers of China. He procured financial aid from the Chinese government and purchased an island off the coast on which he has established a leper hospital.

The coast and islands of China in that region are infested by pirates; and in order to get possession of this island for his work, Dr. Lake found it necessary to make friends with some of the pirates. This he did and secured much help from them in the erection of his leper colony buildings.

Some of the pirates and many of the lepers have become Christians through the efforts of Dr. Lake.

Dr. Lake is pastor of eight mission churches, in addition to his work with the lepers, and also preaches at 20 out-stations of his denomination.
