Wolverine Girl's State to be Conducted in Ann Arbor

A Wolverine Girl's State sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Inc., will be in Ann Arbor at Jordan Hall, University of Michigan, June 18 to 25 inclusive. Girl's State was held last year for the first time, and with great success.

The program this year will be very similar to last year's, including opportunities for actual experience in fields of occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and dietetics. There will be discussions in the fields of nursing, home economics, health education, dramatics, music and art. Well organized recreation will also be a feature of the program.

Not only are relatives of American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary members invited to membership, but also other social, civic and fraternal organizations are invited to sponsor girls. Each organization sponsoring a girl should include in its future program plans an opportunity for the girl to give a report of her week's activities at Girl's State and thereby have her certificate properly signed. It is urged that each girl arrive in Ann Arbor at the appointed time, thereby having the advantage of the initial contacts of the opening day.

Any girl who has reached her fifteenth birthday, but who has not reached her eighteenth birthday on June 1, 1942, is eligible to attend Wolverine Girl's State. It is suggested, however, that senior high school girls should, in general, not be chosen, since it is desirable that the girls who are chosen be able to go back to their respective schools this coming year and relate to their school friends their experiences at Girl's State. A girl should not be chosen on the basis of a single achievement, but rather on her character and potential abilities. Choice might well be made by vote of the respective student bodies and faculty members and by the sponsoring organizations. The following attributes are desired: high sense of duty and morality; mental alertness and intellectual curiosity; vigor, enthusiasm and attractive personality; honesty and industriousness; cooperative attitude and amiability; sportsmanship and considerate feelings of others; marked qualities of potential leadership.

Owing to the increased living costs the fee this year has been raised from $15 to $19 per girl.

Each girl must bring her own towels and soap. In addition she should have sport clothes, swimming suit, blouses and skirts, and one or two afternoon dresses. Play suits are not allowed on the campus, but may be used in the sports program. Comfortable shoes will be needed. No formal dresses are necessary. Girls are urged to bring their musical instruments, golf clubs, cameras and films, tennis rackets and tennis shoes.

Each girl is required to undergo a complete physical examination by her local physician before membership in the Girl's State can be approved. A medical card will be sent to each girl after her enrollment card has been received. Upon arrival at Girl's State a check-up for contagious diseases will be made.

Sunday June 21, will be visitors day. Members of sponsoring organizations and parents may visit Wolverine Girl's State between the hours of 2 and 5 o'clock on this date.

In accordance with the ruling of the National Convention, Wolverine Girl's State will this year be a part of the Americanism program. Last year Ypsilanti sent five girls to Girl's State.

The local chairman is Mrs. O. D. Campbell.
