Bob Gaiters Signs With N. Y. Giants

NEW YORK -(UPI) The New York football Giants Saturday announced the signing of halfback Bob Gaiters of New Mexico State University, their No 1 draft choice to a 1961 contract.

Gaiters, drafted No.1 by the Denver Broncos of the rival American Football League, led the nation's major college rushers with 1,338 yards on 197 carries for a 6.7 average last season.

The 23-year-old speedster, who runs the 100 in 9.7 seconds, also was the country's top touchdown maker in 1960 with 23 and finished first in the individual scoring race with 145 points.

Although a tailback at New Mexico State, the Giants are expected to shift Gaiters to the T-formation halfback post, a position he played well at Zanesville, Ohio, High School and later at Santa Ana Junior college in California.
