FOR THE REPUBLICAN.

Mr. Davis: When I sent you the ayes and noes in the house of representatives on the passage of the Chesapeake and Ohio canal bill, I had not seen the vote of the senate on that measure, which exhibits in a still stronger light the disposition of the friends of the administration to promote internal improvement, and the hostility to it of the friends of Gen. Jackson. The following is the vote:

FOR THE BILL

AGAINST THE BILL.

Adams.

Jackson.

It will thus be seen that while all the administration senators but two* voted for the bill, a large majority of the opposition voted against it. It is worthy of remark also, that all the senators but three, from Jackson states, were opposed to the bill, and that of course all the other Jackson senators who voted for it were from states friendly to the administration. Can it be doubted, then, if the Jackson party succeed in electing their leader, and a majority of the states are brought into his support, that all the measures of internal improvement, which are relied on to exalt the character of this nation, will go to the wall—that the American system will be put down—and the country be again subjected to the control of foreign speculators.

C.

* Mr. Sanford, of New-York, who is counted by our correspondent as a friend of the administration, is said to be uncommitted to either party. The Jacksonians claim him as belonging to theirs whenever it suits their purposes.—Ed.

Main Argument

the senate vote on the chesapeake and ohio canal bill shows strong support from administration friends and opposition from jackson's supporters, warning that a jackson victory would end internal improvements, dismantle the american system, and subject the country to foreign speculators.
