In one of the most unusual accidents of the year, Mrs. Florence Stephens, wife of an African Methodist Episcopal minister, died around midnight Sunday when the automobile in which she was riding plunged off Glenwood Drive into East Lake where the auto was submerged.
The woman was riding with her husband, the Rev. R. S. Stephens, who pastors Mt. Carmel AME church near the Federal Prison, when the car left the road. DeKalb County Officers Ben Hensler and H. G. Tuggle said Richard Glider, 38, of McDonough Boulevard, was driving the automobile.
Nabbed about a quarter of a mile from the scene of the accident by Sterling Slappey, reporter for the Atlanta Constitution, Glider was arrested and booked on a charge of driving an automobile while intoxicated.
The DeKalb officers quoted the minister as saying Glider ran away from the scene and refused to help him rescue his wife. Mrs. Stephens was pronounced dead from drowning after efforts to revive her failed.
Rev. Mr. Stephens is a student at Turner Theological school at Morris Brown College. Funeral arrangements will be completed upon arrival of Mrs. Stephens' mother who resides in Augusta.
The investigating officers said the three people were riding in a sedan type automobile.
