Full Text

Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Powell of Rockvale are in receipt of an excellent letter from their son, Harry, who is in the government naval service on board the U. S. S. Ohio now at Cavite, Philippine Islands. The letter is rather lengthy, giving a detailed account of his experiences in that country. He says that at night they all strip and sleep out in the open air on the forecastle, and it is none too cool either. Harry's duties are to write out the steam log twice, make out coal report, oil and water reports, take care of three store rooms; and when under way have the propeller journal of the ship and revolutions to figure out each night. The log has to be exact, as it is by that the distance covered and the position of the vessel are made out. He is on the same vessel with Willie Halpin of Florence, whom he gets to see every day. The Ohio is watching the interned Russian vessels at Manila.
