THE LADY AND HER KNIGHT.

Lady.--Tread softly, love,
For the warder's above,
And a guardian, the Baron, will hear thee,
By the bell in the tower,
'Tis his banquet hour--
Hark. Lo, echoes of terror are near thee.

Knight.--O whisper again!
And I fear not men;
I will wait in disguise 'till the morrow,
Then thy guardian will go
To encounter the foe--
My presence shall banish thy sorrow.

Lady.--Fly, quickly fly!
If the lattice be high
At the eve of to-morrow come hither;
I will tell thee the day
Thou canst steal me away
From the churl who has doom'd me to wither.

Knight.--By the moonbeam's wave,
By the seaman's grave,
A vow, lovely bird of the tower I
I will waken thy heart
With thy knight to depart,
And will wed thee from merciless power.
