ATTEMPTED MURDER AND SUICIDE

One week ago last night between the hours of 12 and 1 a. m. at the residence of Mr Charles Bass of West Vermont street in this city, Mr Oscar Abbot, a well-known and respected young man and a stenographer at The FREEMAN office, shot and seriously wounded Miss Celia Bass, after which he shot himself expiring almost instantly. For some time the two young people had been betrothed lovers, and the desire on the part of Miss Bass to break the engagement, or at least postpone the final day, seems to have been the unfortunate suicide's motive for his rash deed. His body was taken in charge by relatives and friends, and was sent to Washington, Court House, Ohio., where his grief stricken mother resides, for burial Monday morning following the shooting. His associates on THE FREEMAN, as a mark of respect marched in a body to the residence of Mrs Hattie Jones, on W. North street Sabbath afternoon and placed at the head of the casket that contained the remains a beautiful floral anchor and cross composed of lilies, roses, smilax, forget-me-nots, and trailing vines. His unfortunate victim Miss Bass, who was also an employee of The FREEMAN, had a most narrow and miraculous escape from an instant and terrible death. The ball which fit a 38 caliber revolver, crushed through the right side of the face below the temple and found a lodgment in the spongy portion of the nose Up to Monday afternoon her condition was attended with some uncertainty for the ball had not been located. The latest report from her bedside was that she had passed the danger mark and nothing stood in the way of her sure recovery. The mother of the wounded girl and Mrs Chas. Bass are unremitting in their attention and care and within a few weeks at most she will be able to be removed to her home at Connersville.
