WASHINGTON, (P) Senator Bob Bartlett has urged a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee to approve a substantial increase in funds for land surveys in Alaska in the year beginning July 1.
Bartlett noted the 1961 budget asks $1,113,000 for this work and urged the figure be raised to between two and three million dollars.
Under the Alaska Statehood Act, he said, the state may select 103 million acres of public lands over the next 25 years. Bartlett said the funds are needed to put the survey program on a timetable basis so that orderly selections can be made.
Bartlett, in his appearance Wednesday, supported an increase of $5,213,400 over the budget recommendation of $1,786,000 for the national forest program. He said this would provide $250,000 for an office-laboratory for timber and fire protection research at Fairbanks.
Bartlett also told the committee that during fiscal 1960, Interior Department administrative costs for the Pribilof Island fur seal industry were estimated at $1,940,000, and Alaska's share of proceeds at $813,919.
Bartlett said he was concerned to note that administrative costs are expected to rise to $2,070,000 in fiscal 1961, and that the state's receipts are to drop to around $310,850. He suggested that the Interior Department be requested to justify the increased administrative costs.
