Why do not more preachers go to Montreat? is a question that is asked many times about the grounds. There are hundreds that have gone there and have gone away with a feeling that they have received a great blessing. But there are many more that have not gone. There may be some who have other reasons, but we believe that the far greater number are kept away from the lack of the moderate amount of money needed to pay expenses. It does not cost as much to make a visit to Montreat as it does to most summer resorts, but there are very few preachers who can go off on a vacation, even if they leave their families behind unless it be to supply some other church while its pastor is away. If a church wants to make an investment that will bring it the largest returns, it should give its pastor a vacation and provide him the means to go to Montreat for three or four weeks. This should not be done as an act of charity, nor for the purpose of giving the pastor a pleasure, but from a business point of view. The pastor is paid a salary, because he works for the church. If a small amount in addition will fit him better to do this work, it is the part of wisdom for that amount to be spent. Any church that sends its pastor to Montreat will find when he returns that he will preach better sermons and do better work in every way than he has ever done before. If the church officers are as wise in this as they are in other matters, they will make arrangement before another summer comes to see that their pastor is given the opportunity to go to Montreat. The church will receive as great a blessing as he.
