Nearby.—Success Of Trial Ex-
ceeds Expectations.

I saw a city play the least dangerous of modern war games the other night and it wasn't a pretty sight. From the highest knoll on Putnam Heights, four of us stood and watched three towns in this northeastern industrial defense section of Connecticut blanket themselves in the questionable security of darkness against a mock air attack.

And as darkness plummeted over this rolling countryside and the unearthly wail of sirens arose from the abyss, there wasn't a one of the four of us who didn't sense the grim, stark horror that hovered hidden somewhere in the dark behind all this gesture of make-believe.

Putnam's blackout was a complete success when one takes into consideration
