Full Text

While Britain's sons in self opinion wise.
Each foreign folly lash and satirize ;
While we, our own importance to advance,
Shew jealous Spaniards, and the fops of France;
We may by them, with strictest truth be blam'd,
And Britain's Isle, the Isle of Dogs be nam'd.
If future times we might anticipate,
Or cast an eye into the Book of Fate ;
With reason good, we might expect to see,
Honour conferr'd on Dogs of each degree';
See Lords and Dukes Support a Puppy's pall,
And tears of grief for fav'rite Lap dogs fall.
No florid speeches 'gainst this Act we hear,
No bold declaimers in the list appear ;
No fannell'd Patriot with distorted face,
Opposing measures, 'cause he's out of place ;
No troops of rhetoric or fine pun phrase,
To gain attention, and news paper praise :
No tribute bold to take the people's part,
With manly eloquence, to reach the heart.
Who cou'd withstand this patriotic Act,
Founded on Reason, buttress'd up by fact ?
No : all was hush, no insolent demur,
In Britain's Cause her Fiends must all concur:
Sure cerberus, as ancient tories tell.
Who keeps the door, and guards the mouth of Hell
Did at that time at W--t attend.
And give his word each Patriot to befriend.
Methinks I hear the Hydra headed brute,
Thus to his royal master raise his suit ;
Great Lucifer, upon our British friends,
Our cause on earth most certainly depends ;
' Show then dread Sire, some proof of your regard,
: And with warm places all their zeal reward.' T.R.
