Man Fights Extradition To Georgia Chain Gang

WASHINGTON, April 16 (INS)- The Supreme Court today turned down a new plea by a Negro fugitive fighting extradition to a Georgia chain gang.
The court, with Justice Douglas in disagreement, rejected an appeal by Leon Johnson-- alias Robert McMillian--from a Pennsylvania Supreme Court decision supporting his removal to Georgia.
Johnson has been in the Allegheny County Prison since his capture in Pittsburgh several years ago. He escaped from a life sentence imposed in 1943 in Georgia for the murder of a woman.
The case has been in the courts ever since former Gov. Ellis Arnall issued a warrant of extradition. Johnson is free now to renew the fight in federal courts.
