Full Text

Use of Chloroform.

Dr. Mott restored the contracted arm of a young woman, at one of his recent cliniques before the medical class of the University, on Broadway. She was also under the influence of Chloroform.

Three weeks previous, this young woman woke in the morning and found her arm stiff and benumbed, apparently as if her body had rested upon it. She could straighten it out, and the effort caused extreme pain. In this condition it remained two or three weeks, becoming so rigid that nothing but force could restore its natural action.

The operation was a painful one. Yet the arm was straightened, the contracted muscles extending, detaching themselves from the fleshy part of the arm where adhesion had taken place. The patient moaned a little, but there was no apparent suffering.
