SAVANNAH, Ga. - A new feature of the first session of Summer School at Savannah State College for this year is the organization of a non-credit class in Journalism and newswriting.
The class is temporarily under the direction of Wilton C. Scott, director of Public Relations at Savannah State College, and is open to all persons registered for the first session who are interested in learning how to co-ordinate, edit, and/or publish a school newspaper, as well as how to operate a school press service.
George Jenkins, assistant editor and linotype operator for the Savannah Tribune, lectured to the class last Wednesday. Mr. Jenkins spoke on the tremendous challenge that the newspaper has today and of its competition with other kinds of communication. He also touched upon the various aspects of Journalism that might be of importance to persons who serve as advisors of school newspapers.
Mr. William Fielder, associate editor of the Savannah Morning News, has been invited to speak to the group on Wednesday, June 30.
The members of the class are: Mrs. Willie Bell Hall Johnson, Mrs. Mattie D. Stephens, Mrs. Erma B. Dowdy, Mrs. Hattie M. Winston, Mr. Julian Bell, Mrs. Mary Jackson, Mrs. Otha Pettigrew, Miss Mollie Sams, Mr. Clarence Lofton, Mr. Charles Locke.
During the next session, a course in Journalism will be offered as a part of the regular curricula. This course will allow five quarter hours credit. Mrs. Letta C. Upshur, instructor of English, will teach the course.
