DAWSON SAYS HE WILL NOT BE CANDIDATE CONGRESSMAN FROM SECOND IOWA DISTRICT ANNOUNCES HE WILL NOT ALLOW NAME TO GO BEFORE PRIMARY.

BUSINESS REASONS GIVEN AS CAUSE IN LETTER TO CHAIRMAN LANE OF CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEE DAWSON SAYS HE MUST MAKE PROVISION FOR FAMILY.

Washington Bureau of The Ottumwa Courier Washington, D. C., Jan. 15.

Representative Dawson of the Second Iowa district will not be a candidate before the primary next June for renomination. This announcement was made by Dawson today.

Dawson says:

"Every man owes it to his family to provide against the day of need, and having devoted six years to the service of my district, I feel that plain duty to my family requires that I return to private life in order that I may have an opportunity to make financial provision for those dependent on me."

Representative Dawson has given out the following letter:

"Washington, D.C., Jan. 14, 1910. -

Hon Joseph R. Lane, chairman Republican congressional committee, Second Iowa district, Davenport, Iowa.

"My dear Lane.-Pursuant to the suggestion I made to you some weeks ago, I think the time has come when I should make public announcement of my intention not to be a candidate for renomination for representative in congress before the primary next June. In making this announcement, the thought uppermost in my mind is that of gratitude to the Republicans of the district for three unanimous nominations and to the people, irrespective of party, who have by their votes at the polls ratified these nominations and commissioned me to represent this great district in the congress of the United States. For these renewed expressions of confidence I am profoundly grateful and I have found my greatest pleasure in showing that appreciation by unremitting and undivided efforts in behalf of our district and country.

Owes Duty to Family.

"The position of representative in congress is not only one of high honor but includes exacting duties and is not without its cares, burdens and disadvantages, especially from the domestic and personal standpoint. My conception of the proper discharge of these duties has impelled me to devote my entire time and attention to them. Holding this view of public duty, I have not deemed it proper to take any part of the time which belonged to the public to devote to private business.

"Every man owes it to his family to provide against the day of need, and having devoted six years to the service of our district, I feel that plain duty to my family requires that I return to private life in order that I may have an opportunity to make a financial provision for those dependent on me.

Gratified by United Support.

"I shall carry with me into private life, to be treasured as long as I live, the keen satisfaction that the cares and burdens of the office will sink into insignificance beside the loyal friendships I have formed among the people of the district. It will also be most gratifying to remember that I have been favored with the undivided support of my party in the district without a tinge of factionalism, a support which is of immeasurable strength to a member of congress in the successful performance of his duties and of corresponding benefit to the constituency which he serves."
