Great Victory in the West.

[Special Dispatch to the Memphis Appeal.]

New Orleans, March 29. - Houston dates of the 25th inst., have been received in this city, by which we have intelligence of a glorious victory obtained by the Confederate army, under Gen. Sibley, in New Mexico.

The battle was fought at Valverde, four miles above Fort Craig, on the 21st ult.

The Confederate forces numbered two thousand three hundred, and that of the Federals one thousand regulars, and four thousand New Mexico volunteers, including one hundred men from Pike's Peak.

The enemy first attempted to turn our left flank, but they were repulsed by Maj. Lockridge. They then attacked the whole line, but were again repulsed. They next concentrated against our left, and forced our troops to fall back, when they crossed a battery of guns over the river. This move proved fatal. We charged the battery, and took it at the point of the bayonet and with our shot guns and revolvers, after a desperate struggle. The enemy fled across the river, after suffering a terrible slaughter.

The contest throughout was one of the most disastrous in the records of the war. The Confederate loss was thirty-six killed and one hundred and six wounded: that of the enemy in killed and wounded over five hundred.

Major Lockridge and Capt. Van Horn were killed. Col. W. L. Robards, slightly wounded.

In the beginning of the fight a shell exploded in the midst of Kit Carson's regiment, killing and wounding twenty. The regiment then fled in great panic to the mountains.

Twenty-five hundred of the enemy have returned to Fort Craig. The balance are missing, and we have them completely surrounded. They must surrender. Their forces are at our mercy.

The battle is universally regarded as decisive of the fate of New Mexico We captured a field battery of seven pieces, which are splendid guns, two hundred and fifty muskets, and many prisoners.

Col. Green commanded our forces. Gen. Sibley was sick, but appeared on the field. Gen. Canby commanded the Federals.
