The Chicago Sun expresses itself in this fashion on the result of the recent election :
The magnitude of the Republican triumph last Tuesday is far beyond ready comprehension. As a civic revolution it has no parallel in the political history of this or any other civilized country on the face of the earth. The fact that it shows a revolt on the part of 1,300,000 Democratic voters conveys only an intimation of its immensity. It reached every niche and corner of the Republic; shattered the 'solid South,' and almost solidified the great North.
In not a single one of the thirty States commonly designated 'the North' does the Democratic party retain control, and of the 234 Congressmen elected from those States, the Democrats secured only 13. Fourteen Western and Northwestern States elected solid Republican delegations, and had not Ohio elected two Democrats and Illinois one the party would have been without representation in all of the vast territory North of Mason and Dixon's line and East of the Rocky Mountains.
Sectional or geographic lines were ignored and the great Republican tidal wave swept over Missouri, Kentucky and West Virginia : invaded Texas, North and South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee, leaving Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas and Florida as the sole representatives of a 'Solid South' that had maintained its integrity for a period of thirty years.
The meaning of this wonderful revolution is on the surface and can be read even by him who runs. It is an overwhelming rebuke of the Democratic policy that prospers foreign industries at the expense of our own, thereby bringing idleness, poverty and misery into more than a million American homes. It is a withdrawal of the vote of confidence given to the Democratic party two years ago, and a condemnation of its administration of affairs from the beginning, not less its niggardly and unjust dealings with veteran pensioners than its odious tariff and revenue laws, which the President himself declared to be tainted with imbecility and dishonor.
It is, in short, the voice of two-thirds of our people denouncing the Democracy as an aggregation of pretentious incapables-as a party to which was given every opportunity to endear itself to the people, but which, instead of wisely improving the opportunity wrote for itself the epitaph of Failure, and was crushed under the displeasure of the same people who had invested it with power.
